Extended Day School SPRING CALENDAR 2011-2012

Extended Day School- PRINCIPAL’S ACADEMY 2011-2012
CITYWIDE COUNCIL ON HIGH SCHOOLS: Upcoming vacancies on the Citywide Council on High Schools
Because the legislature did not change the membership requirements for the Citywide Council on High Schools when it renewed mayoral control, several CCHS members who are parents of seniors will be ineligible to complete their term. We anticipate vacancies as of July 1 in the following boroughs: Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, & Staten Island

If you are the parent of a student who will be enrolled in a public high school in any of these boroughs as of July 1, 2012, and are interested in serving on CCHS, please go to http://schools.nyc.gov/Offices/CEC/GPInformation/default.htm for an application form (available in multiple languages) and other relevant information.

Mid-term vacancies are filled by appointment. The procedure is as follows: FACE receives and vets all applications, and forwards those deemed eligible to CCHS; the Council will make the actual appointment(s) after interviewing the applicants at a public meeting.

Please note that we are advertising now in an effort to ensure a full Council after July 1st. However, FACE will not review any application until an actual vacancy occurs (i.e., once the child has graduated).

We encourage all interested persons to come to the CCHS monthly meeting (May 9, 6 PM at Curtis HS, Staten Island; or June 13, 6 PM, at Tweed) and to contact CCHS at 718-752-7478 or cchs@schools.nyc.gov with any questions.

Important message from AP of Safety & Security

Dear Parent/Guardian:

In recognition of our emphasis on safety and security, our school has been chosen to participate in a NYC Department of Education pilot program (General Response Protocol) that will focus on emergency preparedness in all NYC Public Schools.

As one of the schools involved in this pilot, we will be conducting several types of drills designed to help prepare our school community for three different types of responses to emergencies that may occur: evacuation, lock down, and shelter-in. The attached General Response Protocol GRP FACT SHEET (click on the red Important Announcement button above) provides more information about these actions.

As you know, every school currently has procedures for emergencies. Drills are conducted throughout the year to prepare our staff and students, and make improvements in emergency planning. Participation in this pilot will allow our school to conduct additional training for staff and students, and enhance our current protocols.

Should you have any questions regarding the pilot, or the material outlined in the attached document, please contact Mr. Marinello, Assistant Principal Safety and Security, at 718 698-4200, extension 1721.

Principal's Message

Dear Parent / Guardians,

I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you to continue monitoring your children’s progress. Ask to see your child’s student class contracts (see school website), daily class notes, homework and project assignments and graded quizzes and tests. Our Parent/Teacher Conference is scheduled for Thursday, March 29, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:30 P.M. and Friday, March 30, from 12:30 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. Please mark these dates on your calendar.

I would also like to remind you of the wide range of Academic Intervention Services tutoring available to your children at Susan E. Wagner High School. Our tutoring schedule is posted on the school website (students should speak to their teachers or department assistant principals). School day tutoring is available daily and after school and immediately prior to the January, June and August Regents exams. Please refer to the schedule posted on the school website.

Parental involvement coupled with strong academic instruction is the key components of a successful high school experience. Although we inform parents on a regular basis regarding absences, lateness and cutting, it is imperative that parents communicate with their children regarding academic progress. Please know that student’s report card grades and Regents grades will be the deciding factor in whether they meet PSAL eligibility requirements and most importantly graduate from high school.

Our College Office continues to help our students prepare for the world of higher education. Our annual College and Career Fair held on March 14th was again a huge success. I am pleased to report that well over 70 college and career representatives were on hand to speak with our students and their families.

As the spring term progresses we look forward to many more exhilarating events at our school such as the Spring Concert and Art Show, school musical “Sweeney Todd,” Latin Fair, Scholars Fair, School Carnival, Wagner Idol, Band Trip to Boston and a variety of graduating senior class events.

As we continue the productive and valuable partnership between Susan E. Wagner High School staff and parents, I want you to know that we will always be available to answer questions that parents may have regarding their child’s progress in school or in other matters of concern. Any inquiry regarding student subject class should begin with a telephone call or note to your child’s teacher. If you need further information or clarification following that first step, please do not hesitate to contact our Assistant Principals or Parent Coordinator.

Wearing apparel can enhance or detract from any situation. This is especially true in a school setting. It is important that you remember what clothing is inappropriate in school. Included are:

a. Halter tops, spaghetti strap tops and tube tops

b. Tank top T-shirts without sleeved T-shirt underneath

c. Oversized basketball jerseys without undershirts

d. Tight ribbed underwear tank top

e. Sheer tops without undershirts

f. Any clothing which exposes the midriff

g. Shorts or skirts which are too short or revealing

h. Going barefoot or in stocking feet

i. Clothing with writing or pictures which are suggestive, obscene, or distasteful; or which is worn in a distractive manner. Of course, hats, caps, visors, head bands or other head gear are not permitted.
